A Dear Friend Went Astray
By Erika Ayala
How much do you value your religion? Do you think religion plays a vital role in our lives? Growing up, Sam, one of my best friends, believed that there is a God. She grew up in a home where everyone believed that there is a God. Catholicism was the foundation of her learnings about religion. They hear mass every week. If they miss one service, they make an effort to go one weekday. What's nice about their family is that they attend as a family. It's important for them to be complete each time they go to church. However, do you think that makes them a believer automatically? In Sam's case, it evolved differently. Knowing Sam's family history when it comes to religion, I would never think she would go astray. Unfortunately, she did. During our high school years, the rebel attitude started to bloom in her life. She started dating, drinking and partying at a very young age. Consistently, she would start disobeying her parents, not even joining them for mass. In a way, she looked like the “black sheep”. Analyzing her situation, it just opened up my mind, and gave me a clear realization that the family is not the denominator to make you a real believer, or a Christian. Her family could value religion to the extent that their faith is on rock solid but that doesn't mean she feels the same way too. For Sam, religion is not important. It is not a necessity to be faithful and believe that there is a God. Her life goes on and on even without attending mass with her family. There was no value given to religion. Sam's case is not a rare case anymore. In this generation, freedom is being encouraged. And we are given the chance to choose for ourselves. On the other hand, our choices determines our destination also. Whether you like it or not, religion affects us. It doesn't only affect our faith but affects our lifestyle. Going back to Sam's case, the moment she started her new life, leaving the religious life, her lifestyle changed at the same time. She didn't have fear anymore. No fear towards God, even her family. In fact, when I asked her what her religion is, she just kept silent. That wasn't important to her anymore. Her mindset is fixed to herself and how she will be successful in her career. Her parents was not a big part of her decisions anymore. In short, religion affected her way of thinking, her lifestyle. God is real. I can attest to that. In other words, religion or your faith in God can really affect the totality of how you live your life. I don't think Sam is getting the blessings she is supposed to have because of her disobedience. There is no support from her parents anymore. Plus, her selfish attitude prevailed. God is not in the center of her life anymore, not even a single part of it. Looking at her now, I am more inclined towards believing that indeed, God is real. |
