Adopt A School – Share Your Blessings

By Erika Ayala

Living in a third world country is never easy. It is like a jungle or a zoo filled with different kinds of animals. Some are weak, some are strong. If you are weak, you will be eaten alive. In comparison to our nature, third world citizens hear discriminations when they go abroad. Get the feeling of being out of place when they are with people who are in developed countries. For instance, you are a Filipino and you go to the middle east, people there regard Filipinos as domestic helpers or simply laborers. There is a generalization towards people who are in developing countries as compared to people from Scandinavian countries or first world countries – United States and the rest. In general, life in the third world is quite depressing, knowing that there are more poor people than the wealthy ones.

In terms of politics and business, leaders from developing countries are the least to be heard of. It is rare to hear of citizens from developing countries to be looked up to or thought of highly. When there is UN conference, most of the speakers come from the rich and highly-developed countries like Japan, China, United Kingdom and other countries that are wealthy. If you come from developing countries, like Vietnam and Philippines, your voice will be heard but not given that much importance. How can there be equality if that's how the world treats each other? Well, that's reality. Wherever we go, politics is really involved. However, we cannot always tolerate that if we want to see our world to become a better place. We don't want to allow the next generation experience more international conflicts if we don't act upon it now through our own little ways.

If we want to make the world a better place, one thing we have to do is act upon it. You don't just sit down, watch the news and wait for something to happen. You don't just enjoy going to Sea World with your family, shop all you want in New York, travel in different countries, while others are suffering from poverty. Apathy should not even be encouraged at all. If you are courageous enough and have the compassion, help people from other countries. This will surely impact the world.

Helping doesn't necessarily have to big like how Oprah makes her charity works. There is no need to ask for the media's help and broadcast it to the world. One way of helping is through checking out the available international socio-civic organizations. You can use the Internet as your reference. If you don't believe in that, one way is to contact directly the country you would wish to help. Look for for schools you want to sponsor, especially if education is your advocacy. In the Philippines, there are many schools that are in need of your help. These schools give scholarships to those who are less fortunate but willing to learn and succeed for their future. In short, there is no excuse if you want to help. Make a change for the better of this world. If you want to be blessed, then let's bless one another.
