Discipline for Children
By Erika Ayala
Raising up a child is never easy. I have evidently seen it in how my parents raised me up, together with my siblings. Decades ago, when we were still cute and little, my siblings and I constantly fight over silly stuff. There were times when we all quarreled over a single Barbie doll. Often times, we debate about who among us is our parents' favorite. Such non-sense things had full of sense back then. If you were in our home, you wouldn't want to go back because of all the noise and fights we create almost every single day. For our parents to witness such fights, they never gave up on disciplining us. The discipline that our parents gave us is still retained in our minds until now. It wasn't the usual discipline wherein they had to spank us or use belts to get our attention. Well yeah, that was part of it but my parents concentrated in the area of listening and real 'parenting'. What do I mean by real parenting? My parents listened to our sides before coming up with a conclusion of spanking us. They needed to explain why we were wrong. It was more of a counseling type of discipline, which made us, children, more mature in obeying and following rules. The children are the future leaders of this world. As they grow up, they already grasp and learn the values that they carry out when they are adults. It is easier for children to learn while they are young. They copy what they see. Recently, I have seen an advertisement showing how children get their habits. There was a mom shown screaming towards another person while the kid is watching. The kid doesn't know that it is wrong so she copies it. The mom wears make-up and so does the child too. The dad smokes so the son doesn't see anything wrong in smoking also so he copies his dad. In short, kids can be easily influenced, especially by their parents. And if they don't learn how to distinguish what is right and what is wrong, it is most likely that would be hard to change when they are already in their adolescent years. Going back to my experience, if my parents didn't discipline us in that way, showing us the right path and making us realize our mistakes, I don't think I will become a wise person now. I am truly grateful that they never run out of love and patience for me. Despite my naughty and disobeying attitude, they managed to show me how it is to become a loving parent. In addition, my parents inculcated in my mind that I should have fear not only towards my parents but fear of God. By having that fear, it made me have more awareness that I shouldn't go astray and pursue my selfish wants. The person I am now is because of my parents. They are one of the greatest factors for my success. |
