How To Become An Effective Leader

By Erika Ayala

What constitutes a good leader? Who is a good leader for you? Everyone has their own leaders. Whether in work, in school, at home or even as a simple and ordinary citizen, we have a leader. Even though you are the president of a country, you still have a leader. A leader is someone you follow, it could be forced, obligated or necessary. But that doesn't mean that you follow your leader, that person is a good leader already. I believe in the saying, a good leader is a good follower. Let me give you tips and personal insights on how to become a good and effective leader.

1.Inspire your people and prove that you are knowledgeable. To become effective in inspiring people, the people under you should see how enthusiast you are in the field of your work. A vision must be sought. The respect is gained through being knowledgeable also. You should know more than the people. There is nothing wrong from getting suggestions and opinions but you should establish that you are advance and have deep understanding on whatever field you are leading.

2.Build trust. This is one of the most difficult factor to build. Gaining your people's trust takes time, effort and heart. You, as a leader, should be able to show your people that you are the best person to trust. Like politician, they win the hearts of people by communicating with them. Being transparent and addressing their concerns are good ways in able to build the trust. Just remember, it is important for people to know that they can rely on their leader. That trust is something you should cherish but not take advantage of.

3.Stick to your principles and have credibility. Whenever you say something, make sure you mean it and you do it. We know that leaders are good in speaking but not all of them are true to their words. The people would lose their willingness to follow in a democratic community if they see their leaders are purely good in talking but no doing. Actions are louder than words. A promise is not a promise if the action is not seen or done. Thus, be responsible to your principles, values and commitments to the people. Do not make them hope for nothing. Live accordingly to what is right, not what is wrong. Your credibility depends on yourself, not on what people speaks of you.

4.Take care of your people. Without your people, you will never become a leader. An effective leader is seen through its followers. You should be able to have a team-player and a team-leader attitude. As a leader, you are not always above your people. Most of the time, you work as a team, putting your feet on the ground with them. Keep in mind that your power and authority depends on the people you have. Hence, it is best to take responsibility of making your people feel important in your team.

Do you think you can be a good leader? Then take action and start acting like a real leader.

I think one of the most important things for a leader to do is to listen to the followers.
