Safe Adventure Trip

By Erika Ayala

Traveling in a foreign country may be called as an adventure in different ways. One, if you have no itinerary. You do whatever you feel like doing. You go wherever the wind takes you. It sounds strange but that's how most travelers 'plan' their trips. Most especially backpackers, they are cowboys without following a certain plan but knows where their destination is. Two, traveling can be an adventure if you experience certain horrible cases and survive it in the end. Think about movies like Up, The Wizard of Oz, and other similar movies, wherein they just landed somewhere and experienced a great adventure. On the other hand, there are risks in taking adventures like that when you travel. Your safety is at stake in this situation.

When you travel, there is nothing wrong in taking an adventurous ride. But you should be aware of certain limits. As a traveler, it is your responsibility to be in charge of yourself - your safety and protection. In other words, nobody else will take care of yourself except you, especially if you are in a foreign land. Since I travel frequently, I came up with some tips and advices travelers like you might need. These advices are all results of my adventurous experiences as I travel different towns and countries.

First, stay in a place that is 'safe'. Whenever you travel, you should always be aware of the location of your hotel or motel. If you are going to stay in a hotel, book earlier. That is better than walking-in. As you book earlier, you have time to research about the hotel's location. You will be able to check the nearby coffee shops, businesses, malls, or other establishments. In the Philippines, Anito Hotels are usually recommended for their good environment and locations. Their hotels are usually located near many establishments and in the heart of the city. At least, when you are already at the hotel like that, you wouldn't be a 100% stranger, not knowing the environment or the place you are in. The same principle goes if you are getting a motel.

Second, choose to stay in a place that is not close to rural areas. Staying at the downtown areas are more recommended. Usually, when you stay in the downtown, you have more access to more tourist spots. Whether you stay in a hotel or a motel, it is safer because the environment is surrounded with a lot of people and foreigners like you. When I visited Sydney, Australia, I stayed at the downtown area. My hotel was located near the malls and different tourist attractions. I was able to see the Sydney Opera House since it was not that far away from my hotel. It was an adventure for me still, for I walked from my hotel to the opera house itself. I was able to explore the city but not be terrified of the environment since I chose to stay in that area.

Third, learn the the basics of the language you are going to visit. If you are going to a non-English speaking country, it is a big challenge for you to communicate with them. My Hong Kong experience taught me the lesson to at least learn the basics of Chinese. When I rode the cab, it was difficult for the driver to understand English. Even if I say the English name of the hotel, he didn't understand it. It was a disaster! I had to look for the key card of the hotel and show the Chinese name to him. Therefore, I learned to research first before traveling to non-English speaking countries after that experience.

So, if you are planning to take an adventurous trip the next time you travel. Take note of the following advices I mentioned above. It's better to be safe than sorry.
