The Danger of Chatting Online

By Erika Ayala

Nowadays, almost everyone knows how to use the computer, most especially the young ones. As young as 4 years old, children can already use the cellphone or similar gadgets. My cousin Nathan, who is currently 5 years old, has his own cellphone. He can call his parents anytime he wants. Normally, he uses his iPod when he wants to listen to music. Teenagers are stuck in the computer using Facebook, Twitter or simply chatting online. If you come to notice it, they spend most of their time chatting online, than actually spending time together. Visibly, the world is becoming more and more 'techie'.

On the other hand, not everyone can see the disadvantages of being too 'techie', in the area of communicating. According to some experiences and words of mouth, a lot of people get in trouble due to that. According to a friend, one of her colleagues who is from the Philippines filed a case against another person for the reason of libel. Defamation or libel is a communication of a statement that makes a claim, which is expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual. It is dangerous for anyone to state false messages through chatting. Or else, someone can hack your account and print out the statements you have made.

In the case of my friend's colleague, her friend Ann was chatting with one of her good friends and gave a joke about her enemy that he was gay. For some reason, that conversation, made online, was printed out and shown to the man named Peter. Her account was hacked, claimed by Ann. Because she was certain that her good friend didn't print out the conversation. Peter didn't want to say who showed him, but he was sure of filing a case to Ann and her friend, leaning more on Ann. We are not sure of how the issue resulted to. But one thing is for sure, there is danger in using the internet for communication. The safety is not assured.

Lesson learned in this? Don't even try to gossip about someone using the internet. You would never know who knows how to hack an account to put you in shame. There is a law that is strong, which can put you down. To be safe, talk to people face to face especially in that matters, gossiping. Libel is already enough to be filed against you, using evidences like printed chat messages, etc. Anything published can be harmful to your reputation. It is better to be safe than sorry. Hence, know the laws and know your limitation. The world is not always an angel to you, it could be a devil that can set your name on fire.

Great Intel. Some of the advantages to chatting are that people talk to people as equals without the bias of appearance, social status, race, and other factors where people are often prejudged when talking or not talking face to face.

The world IS becoming more techie and it is good that our children are learning how to deal with it early. Learning what to do and what not to do. Those that adapt will be at an advantage over those who don't adapt to the new world of technology.

Of course, some people like me use chats to create new unique content websites like Talking with a Tristar Sales Consultant
