The Danger of Internet Technology

By Erika Ayala

Decades ago, Internet can only be used by the affluent people. Those who can afford to buy computer and Internet connection are the ones who benefit from these resources. In this generation, we can see that everyone, including little kids, are knowledgeable in using the computer. Social status is not a hindrance anymore. Internet is now accessible to all kinds of people. But what people don't understand now is the danger of getting easy access to the Internet.

Children are the number one on the list of victims. I call them as victims because most of the time, the Internet brings them harm instead of influencing them positively. When you go to some Internet cafe or observe children who use the computer, you would notice that about 80% of them don't use it for education or learning. Instead, they use it to get hooked in Internet games or sometimes, even pornography. Not that I am bashing the technology but for kids who are not mature yet, it could be quite dangerous for them.

My cousins, who are about 16 years younger than me, can be an example to my arguments about children who get hooked to this technology. Nathan, one of my cousins, can already use an iPad, iPod, cellphone and of course the computer, as young as 6. He can access websites that are for kids, but sometimes strictly for adults. I noticed that x-rated websites just pop-up on your screens and because of curiosity, you click it at times. That is what happened to my cousin. He didn't know what was the pop-up window until he clicked it. Good thing his mom saw what happened immediately and prevented what he could have seen. This scenario is normal for most kids. Because of curiosity, they click on links that could change their innocence.

Parents should orient their children as early as now what the negative and positive effects of using the computer. It is their responsibility to guide their children on what are things they should avoid. There should be an open discussion and good communication between the two. Children will be more open to their parents if they see that their parents listen to them, not only lecture them and give them sermons. In addition to that, they should also monitor what their children are doing in a subtle way, not looking like a watcher, to avoid problems in the future. If you are a parent, show your children you can trust them yet you are still there to guide them.

Be cautious and responsible for your children. The Internet is a good technology yet there are still dangers. Don't let them fall into any addiction or get hooked. Always be on the alert side. The Internet is not safe, and so is your children.
