There Are No Accidents

By Erika Ayala

Filipinos are all over California, I've noticed. In every event I attend, there is at least 2% chance that I would meet a Filipino or a Filipina. Having a Filipino blood makes my heart feel warm as I get to interact with people that came from the same race as mine. There is this instant connection that makes the conversation entertaining.

One evening, in this product launch I attended, I met another Filipina who I couldn't forget. Her story touched my heart that I wanted to cry all over the place but I couldn't. One reason is that my make-up will be a mess and everyone would think something happened. Back to the Filipina I met, she told me why she chose to go the US and live here instead. Her story started with her parents separating. Their family came from Southern Leyte, one of the provinces in the Visayas region. Her father runs an abaca business. They sell products made of abaca, like furnitures, household products, slippers, etc. Sally, the Filipina, had a wealthy life back in the Philippines. Unfortunately, she had to join her mom to the US due to her parents' separation.

Her story strike me the most when she told me that her mom died after a year. She felt that she shouldn't have left Southern Leyte with her mom. Life became miserable, including her financial problems right after her mom died. It was difficult for her to go back. After that incident occurred, she worked extra hard in order to survive from the mess her mom left her. Sally explained in detail all the trials she went through. Her success was because of her determination and hard work. It was truly impressive to see that now she is a vice-president of a global company in the US.

The father of Sally never contacted her but she thought it was about time to pay her dad a visit. A month ago, she flew to the Philippines to see her dad. As soon as she saw her dad, she immediately hugged him with no hesitations. Tears, smiles and laughter were the emotions of that encounter with each other. Both were overjoyed and nothing else mattered at that time except the fact they were together.

Sally was amazed to see the province she came from is quite different from how she last saw it. The abaca business grew, wherein they had to export in other countries including the US. Sally's dad was also proud of her, on how she grew up despite what happened to their family. The life struggles of Sally made her a stronger person, which is the lesson I learned from her life. She turned her downfall into one of her strongest turning point to persevere and work harder. She showed that there is hope as long as you have faith and you believe in yourself.

Truly, Sally is an inspiration. I'm sure her mom will be proud of what she has become. Leaving Southern Leyte is not a mistake, not even an accident. It is one of the greatest factors that helped her rise up from the ground and turned her life into a success.
